You didn’t think we’d skip FINALLY knowing what happened in Budapest? It’s only been nine years! 2012’s The Avengers made veiled references to a Budapest operation involving Natasha and Hawkeye. It was mentioned again later, but we never got concrete details, leading to almost a decade of fan speculation.
Now, Black Widow confirmed the operation was the final phase of Natasha’s defection to S.H.I.E.L.D. The operation, apparently, entailed taking out General Dreykov – his daughter being collateral damage – and holing up in a subway station for two days while hiding from Hungarian special forces. That’s Jeremy Renner talking to Natasha in that flashback, incidentally, in an uncredited voice cameo.
