In many Marvel properties, the best easter eggs aren’t found in things seen but in things heard. Black Widow’s no different. The first is Don McLean’s American Pie, Yelena’s favorite song, which plays in the prologue.

It’s only fitting – the original served as a eulogy for the American dream in the wake of J.F.K.’s assassination, while Natasha and Yelena are watching the implosion of their own American dream. Then, there’s Malia J.’s cover of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit over the opening credits. This teenage anthem’s message of defiance and self-expression is brutally subverted as we see the Red Room completely dominating its young victims.
