Any occasion in the 90s allowed for one kind of shoe to be worn, regardless of the event: platform sandals. Whether or not they matched the outfit was irrelevant – platform sandals were always considered to be appropriate footwear.
Of course, there was quite a high risk of twisting an ankle whilst wearing them. We have to say, the risk was not worth it in the 90s, and the potential pain still is not worth it today.
