Some castle defenses can be hard to understand just by looking at old photos, but arrow slits are pretty self-explanatory. On top of keeping the defenders who were shooting arrows out much safer, the slits also allowed them easy access to point to nail incoming enemies.
In terms of the overall architecture for castles, arrow slits were always one of the most popular. It’s not difficult to see why when you take into consideration how useful they were.
