It doesn’t matter what old castle you look at it, virtually all of them were designed with gatehouses. Due to the vulnerability of the main gate (given that it’s the main access point to the castle), a higher level of defense needed to be prioritized to it.
Where the gatehouses would come into play is providing the defenders with the ability to attack from seemingly out of nowhere. Thus, enemies would often think twice about storming the main gate.
