Back in the day, war combat was just brutal (not that it isn’t during modern times). Seemingly anything that could be used to inflict damage on the enemy was utilized, and this made machicolations all the more popular.
In short, these contraptions allowed castle defenders the ability to easily drop rocks (and even boiling oil) on those below. Geez, they really had to think of everything back in those days, and we have to say that we’re very impressed with the way that machicolations were designed.
