A lot of the time it was all about strategy when it came to castle defense. This is why sally ports would so often be seen and utilized in castle designs.
They would provide the castle defense team the ability to surprise enemies, though they would still need to be intelligent in the way they attacked. The sally ports could be used to great success, but a smart strategy was still needed to use them to their fullest potential.
