Not everything about medieval castles had to do with war, siege, combat, death, and so on and so forth. Some of the areas of a castle were actually lively, and the inner courtyard was certainly one of those places.
A majority of the reason why is because so many everyday tasks, such as cleaning clothes and shipping foods and goods, were performed there. Even some formal events would be held in the inner courtyard, gathering together several people for a time of happiness.
