Back before keeps were invented and utilized in castles, they placed a stronger emphasis on the outer defenses. The main outer wall that would be integrated was known as the enceinte.
As it was the outer wall of a castle, it would be pretty much impossible to penetrate. The entire dynamic of enceintes, and castles in general, would greatly change once keeps were brought into play, but they were certainly prevalent during the times when keeps weren’t around.
