[post_page_title]Protecting against brute force[/post_page_title]
One of the coolest construction features to protect castles were known as batters (though you will also see them referred to as taluses). They were made to be thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top, and this allowed them to serve quite a few different purposes.
For one, this was a way to prevent the enemy from tearing down the walls with brute force. Additionally, though, batters also made it easier for the castle defenders to rain down arrows, rocks, and other objects down onto the enemy.
