For those who were responsible for the architecture of a castle, they had to literally think of every little thing. One of the possibilities that they had to come to grips with was the enemy fully infiltrating the castle grounds.
So, because of this, old castles would be designed with posterns. These were basically just secret doors that would allow castle inhabitants to escape if they knew that all hope was lost. It was always good to have an escape plan that’s for sure.
