[post_page_title]Castles built on mottes[/post_page_title]
Mottes are a lot like moats, even outside of the spelling of both words, in that they give a castle an enhanced layer of protection by making it harder to access for outside people. The thing about mottes, though, is that they were raised sections of the earth (which is really the best way to describe them).
Both the keep and the bailey could be built in the mottes, but there wasn’t always room for both of them. Regardless, they were very useful for castles thanks to their raised protection and security.
