We can’t even imagine the responsibility of trying to defend a castle. It was something that no one man could accomplish alone, so castles would typically be built with barracks. The long barracks would provide a place for soldiers to rest.
Because the barracks were often within the bailey, additionally, the men staying there were often well versed in other tasks. Given everything that would go into defending a castle, at least there was an area where rest could be had.
