It truly is amazing everything that went into a medieval castle design, as you wouldn’t think that hourdes would be that useful. Yet, the wooden structures would protrude out over the castle buildings to allow another layer of attack. They would allow the inhabitants the ability to drop rocks on oil on the attackers who were underneath them.
Due to their wooden structures, they were also often coated with water to prevent them from being caught on fire. Smart thinking, as that would’ve been an excellent way for the enemy to combat them.
