No matter how well-designed any medieval castle was, there were always weak points present in the best of them. To help alleviate the problems with some of the weaker portions of a castle (such as bridges or gates), you’d often see barbicans utilized.
These were circular fortifications that would be built to stretch out and over some of the aforementioned weak portions. Though the technical design of them would change during the medieval period, the reasoning for them being built stayed the same.
