All we have to say is this, if you told us that invading a castle would potentially lead to us being stuck in an oubliette with no hope of escape, we’d run the other way in terror. Now, things were a lot different in those days, but the fear of oubliettes had to be present.
Basically, these were dungeons that would house prisoners, and they were often dark, small, and treacherous places. Many times, the prisoners would never end up seeing the light again, which was a good way to scare off potential invaders.
