Of all the castle defense systems that were implemented way back in the day, perhaps none were more impactful than moats. Moats, typically being filled with water, were such a great way to protect castles, as they forced potential invaders to really think about their plan of attack.
On top of being harder to access, invaders couldn’t dig under walls with moats around. As a bonus, thanks to the water, moats also gave the inhabitants some fish to eat when they needed a little grub.
