This one was a no-brainer for castle defenders back in the day, and it’s something that you still see implemented in modern times. The importance of spiral staircases for castle defenses was vital, as they accomplished a few different tasks.
Being designed clockwise, they would allow defenders the ability to easily swing down and take down invaders. On the contrary, invaders would be exposed while attempting to climb the staircases. Additionally, the defenders would have the advantage thanks to their coverage from an elevated position.
