One of the most dynamic and versatile of all castle defense systems were ravelins. They were simple in their overall design, as they were three-sided structures that were built away from castles. However, what they provided wasn’t simple at all.
In addition to being able to attack from the sides and the front, ravelins offered defenders elevated positions. Oh, yeah, the walls of the castle would also overlook the ravelins meaning that invaders would be in for an unwelcome surprise.
