It’s not as if this isn’t a popular photo, but not too many understand the origins behind it. To keep a long story short, the stunning Marilyn Monroe was met with some harsh criticism from a columnist in 1951.
She was accused of looking “cheap and vulgar” when she donned a particular red dress. The columnist would go on to say that she would’ve looked better in a potato sack. In the aftermath of those comments, Monroe decided to wear just that, and she still looked phenomenal.
