Shrek turned everything we knew about fairytales and princess tropes upside down. The pretty princess goes through a reverse transformation and turns into an ogre – but it’s presented as a good thing! Instead of fighting it, Fiona embraces her ogre identity (eventually) and marries Shrek.
As much as this never-before-seen plot twist took us by surprise, there were actually some early hints that Fiona was an ogre. When she gathers flies for Shrek, for example, she licks her fingers afterwards…
