Donkey is the hilarious sidekick that every animated movie needs, and we rarely attribute these characters much depth. But Donkey might actually be more mysterious, and tragic, than we initially thought.
We don’t know that much about him, but some theories suggest Donkey was actually a human cursed to live out his life as a donkey… That could explain why everyone treats a talking donkey like such a strange thing, in a movie where all kinds of creatures talk. And, it would explain Donkey’s comment to Puss, when Puss turns into a donkey; “you’ll learn to control it…eventually”. As if he wasn’t always a donkey, but had to get used to it.
