American love their cars because we hate to wait for public transport. It goes against our independent spirit. But part of the reason America is so car-centric is that everything is so large and far apart here. Going to the grocery store, if you live in the suburbs, could mean a 45 minute walk without a car, there’s no convenient public transport.
Even some big cities require cars. LA, for example, requires a car. Otherwise, you’re waiting forever for a Metro or sitting on a bench for hours for a bus.
