People from outside America must get startled at the cash register every time. In America, we understand that tax can feel arbitrary at times. Because each state has its own taxes, we learn never to trust the price on the tag because it will most certainly be higher.
Life would definitely be a lot easier if we had the same taxes across the state lines, but America was never about keeping things simple. We refused the metric system, remember?
