Americans ask “How are you?” like it’s a salutation that needs no reply. All that’s necessary is a perfunctory “Good. Thanks. And you?” No one really wants to hear about your grandkids or your last bout with diarrhea. They’re not wanting to know about your rash or your new AA coin. Really, it’s too much information and American are in a rush.
Don’t make it awkward and tell them your life story. Also, they’d prefer to talk about themselves so, really, just listen and nod and you’ll be fine.
