Historical thriller Argo, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, is a curious case. There does seem to be a case of whitewashing in having Affleck portray CIA agent Antonio Mendez, of mixed European and Mexican descent, who spearheaded the operation to bring six Americans back from Iran.
However, the real Mendez revealed he didn’t think of himself as Hispanic, and had no problems with Affleck playing him. Venerable Mexican-American actor Edward James Olmos still took exception, saying that claiming the movie wouldn’t have been made otherwise was “b*******” and suggesting that Michael Peña or Andy Garcia would’ve been much better – and more faithful – choices.
