[post_page_title]Johnny Depp – Tonto (The Lone Ranger)[/post_page_title]
The Lone Ranger was an enormous box office bomb, so its failure can’t be pinned on any one factor… but Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the titular character’s sidekick Tonto didn’t help. Despite the on-set presence of a Comanche Nation adviser, the movie was pelted with criticism over Depp playing a Native American character.
While his Tonto was called a “Native American Jack Sparrow,” the warrior WAS portrayed by an actual Native American before – Jay Silverheels – in the original 1950s TV show. Defending himself, Depp claimed he had Native American ancestry, and that he wanted to right past wrongs in Native Americans’ media portrayals. You judge whether he succeeded.
