These White Actors Played Non-White Roles

Considering it’s been rebooted on with a female Asian-American lead in 2021, 1972’s Kung Fu TV show has never been more relevant. The original didn’t have casting that was as faithful, unfortunately, as Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine was portrayed by David Carradine. Half-American, half-Chinese, Caine traveled the Wild West in search of his lost half-brother.

It was certainly a novel concept, hampered only by the fact that Carradine is an Irish American with no Asian ancestry. It’s doubly painful considering someone else was considered to star – Bruce Lee! His widow even claimed he came up with the concept, before Warner Bros. stole it from him.
