[post_page_title]Natalie Wood – Maria (West Side Story)[/post_page_title]
Transferring William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to mid-1950s New York City, West Side Story is a story about love and conflict along ethnic lines. It’s the story of forbidden affair between Tony, a former member of an all-white street gang, and Maria, the sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang.
Given that the movie deals so poignantly with how pointless racially-motivated conflict is, it’s sadly ironic that the 1961 movie adaptation cast Natalie Wood to play Maria. Not only that, but most of the other Puerto Ricans were also played by white actors. Thankfully, the 2021 Steven Spielberg version will rectify that.
