Oliver Stone’s 2006 docudrama World Trade Center centered around the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the heroes that rose to the occasion in their wake. Multiple real people populate the movie, including Marine Sgt. Jason Thomas, who helped rescue two Port Authority police officers from under 20 feet of rubble.

The real Thomas is black, but was played in the movie by William Mapother, Tom Cruise’s cousin. Stone claimed he only found out about the discrepancy after production started, but a petition calling for the movie’s boycott circulated nonetheless. Thomas himself was gently critical, telling reporters that stories should be told as accurately as possible.
