The Love Guru was a weird movie. Made in 2008, it would perhaps have been better suited for 1968, as its entire premise hinged on offensive racial stereotypes. White Canadian Mike Myers starred as Guru Pitka, an Indian guru and self-help coach who tries to solve the marital problems of a Toronto Maple Leafs player.

He didn’t wear brownface – thank God! – but did affect a strange accent that wasn’t quite Indian yet was still vaguely offensive. The whole thing was just stupidly disrespectful, like having Indians greet one another by saying, “Mariska Hargitay.” Hindus in both India and North America called for the movie to be banned.
