Poor Tiger Lily. Movie adaptations haven’t always been kind to the Neverland Native American princess. The 1953 Disney animated version may be a classic, but drew criticism in ensuing decades for her tribe’s portrayal. Then, the 2015 live-action adaptation came along, and made things even worse.
Tiger Lily was now played by white American Rooney Mara, who’s a fine actor but seemed an… odd choice. It certainly didn’t help that the minor characters around her were all non-white. She ended up saying she felt bad about the controversy, but not before trying to defend her portrayal by saying the tribespeople weren’t Native Americans but “natives of Neverland.”
