These White Actors Played Non-White Roles

In a classic example of Hollywood’s “white protagonist or no one’ll watch it” mentality, vampire thriller 30 Days of Night completely squandered its potential. Adapting a graphic novel of the same name, both are set in Barrow, Alaska – the northernmost point in the U.S. The real town, now officially known by its indigenous name of Utqiagvik, has an overwhelmingly Inuit population.

White people only make up 16% to 20%, and yet 30 Days of Night had not only two white leads but populated the town almost entirely with white people. The comic’s protagonist was Eben OLEMAUN, an Inuit, who was of course transformed into Josh Hartnett’s Eben OLESON.
