“Stay Away, Joe,” the 1968 Elvis Presley musical comedy, was the very definition of punching down. Though it was arguably well-intentioned, it still presented stereotypes of Native Americans that would’ve been considered offensive and outdated even if the movie wasn’t released the same year of the Civil Rights Act, which endeavored to improve their lives.
Unfortunately, it was. On top of that, seeing the King of Rock stumble through the starring role as a Native American rodeo rider under four pounds of bronzer didn’t do much for the experience.
