Aziz Ansari, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from India, grew up a huge fan of Short Circuit and its sequel. Seeing positive Indian representation in media at the time was incredibly rare, he said, so he was delighted with Ben Jabituya, the scientist who helped build the robot Johnny 5.
It was only years later that he discovered Ben was played by Fisher Stevens, a self-described “thin, white Jewish kid,” in brownface. Ansari actually reached out to Stevens, and learned that Stevens did his best to immerse himself in the role, even living in India for a month. Despite his efforts, it remains a problematic choice.
