Regardless of how much it played fast and loose with the facts, A Beautiful Mind was an outstanding movie. Dealing with the troubled life of American Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash, the movie also featured an Academy Award-winning performance by Jennifer Connelly as Nash’s wife Alicia.
In real life, Alicia was an immigrant from El Salvador, but there was a bigger issue at play here. Having the white Jennifer Connelly play her, fantastically talented though she is, meant erasing the real Alicia’s personal history and experiences, which were interwoven with John’s story in the novel on which the movie was based.
