A Mighty Heart is an extremely powerful story that deserved to be told. It spotlights Mariane Pearl and her search for her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and later executed by terrorists. The real Pearl, born in France, was part Afro-Cuban and part Dutch. Playing her in the movie was Angelina Jolie.
It wasn’t just that Jolie was fully white – it’s that she wore a corkscrew wig and an awkward amount of bronzer. Pearl herself said the story wasn’t about race but rather about how she chose to behave under those extraordinary circumstances, but it still felt uncomfortable to some.
