Increased chatter concerning the 2016 Doctor Strange movie recently wasn’t just because WandaVision and Loki will tie into it somehow. In the movie, white Scottish actress Tilda Swinton portrayed the Ancient One. Even back then Marvel got a lot of heat for turning the male Tibetan monk into a a non-binary Celtic mystic.

Whether “woke” casting or trying to appease the Chinese juggernaut by scrubbing politically problematic references to Tibet, the controversy resurfaced when Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently sort-of-apologized for the decision to cast her, after Swinton privately asked comedienne Margaret Cho to “explain ‘whitewashing’ (to her) on behalf of all Asian-Americans.”
