ScarJo, it was announced, would play the synthetically-enhanced Motoko in the live-action Ghost In the Shell movie, based on a Japanese manga/animated movie. Fans were so upset that a petition was started to recast the role with an Asian actor, and even Ming-Na Wen called it “whitewashing of an Asian role” on Twitter.
