One of this generation’s finest actors, Scarlett Johansson has nearly unmatched range. In fact, she once said that “as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, tree, or animal.” While few people would’ve minded the last two, the first category landed her in trouble.
ScarJo, it was announced, would play the synthetically-enhanced Motoko in the live-action Ghost In the Shell movie, based on a Japanese manga/animated movie. Fans were so upset that a petition was started to recast the role with an Asian actor, and even Ming-Na Wen called it “whitewashing of an Asian role” on Twitter.
