When you have a specific nationality in the title, you should probably have a lead actor who possesses even the most passing resemblance to it. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time thought about it for a second… and said, “Nahhhh.” Dastan, the titular Persian prince, was played by Jake Gyllenhaal, which some have called “insulting” and “the perfect example of whitewashing.”
In fact, the video game adaptation had an entirely-white principal cast portray the rest of the Persian characters as well. One blogger said it wasn’t insulting just to Persians, but to white people as well – insinuating they can’t enjoy movies unless the protagonist’s white.
