To avoid unnecessary family drama, most parents would personally tell close family about a birth before going on social media. In the Royal Family, that isn’t so much good sense as an expectation. As the family is organized by a clear hierarchy, the person at the top needs to be informed at least at the same time as grandparents and siblings, if not first, on royal births.
In keeping with protocol, then, Prince William called the Queen on an encrypted phone immediately to inform her of Prince George’s birth. Only then could William and Kate tell her parents and siblings, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla, and Prince Harry.
