Somewhat shockingly, the Queen herself was actually born in a private home belonging to her maternal grandparents – the first sovereign since the Middle Ages to do so. And while conventional wisdom says Princess Diana was the first royal rebel to give birth in a hospital, she wasn’t.

While she did give hospital birth to the first direct heir to the throne, she was beaten to the general record twice – first in 1970, by the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and then in 1977, by Princess Anne. With Meghan and Harry expecting and living abroad, we may soon get a new record – first royal born in the U.S.
