If you guessed that even the simple act of placing a piece of paper in an easel is governed by a set of arcane rules… Well, no one ever lost money betting on the Royal Family’s affinity for tradition. This particular tradition’s at least as old as Buckingham Palace has been the official royal residence, starting in 1837.

The birth announcement is kept in place for 24 hours, but there’s an added wrinkle – it’s only posted during daylight hours. If a birth takes place late at night, the notice will only be posted publicly after the Queen and other royals have been notified the following day.
