[post_page_title]And using water from the River Jordan[/post_page_title]
The gown isn’t the only Victorian heirloom used by the Royal Family during christenings. Victoria also had the Lily Font created for her first child’s baptism. The silver-gilt bowl resembles an expanded flower, with three cherubs straddling its base.
Except for Eugenie, who was the first member of the Royal Family to receive a private baptism, every royal newborn since Victoria’s first was christened using the bowl. The service is performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury – the Church of England’s most senior bishop. The water used is also special – it’s brought especially from the Jordan River, where the Bible says Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.
