For most Christians, baptizing their children is a matter of free choice. In the Royal Family, it’s a non-negotiable rule. The Queen is, after all, head of the Anglican Church, and so all Windsor babies must be christened. And yes, of course there’s a special tradition involved. From 1841 to 2008, 62 royal newborns wore the same christening gown.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria for her eldest daughter, it was hand-washed with spring water after each ceremony, before being stored in a darkened room. Unfortunately, it was eventually deemed too fragile and was retired, with an exact replica made – the one George, Charlotte, Louis, and Archie were christened in.
