[post_page_title]Joy and Sadness weren’t always the heroes[/post_page_title]
Joy and Sadness are the main characters, so to speak, of Riley’s mind. This might in hindsight seem like an obvious choice, as the two go on a journey in Riley’s brain and eventually realize they need each other to exist. But in earlier drafts of the movie, the writers and directors had Joy and Fear go on the journey instead.
The writer-director Pete Docter has in interviews said that even though pairing led to many hilarious moments, it was ultimately scrapped for the deeper message of the relationship between Joy and Sadness.
