Most Pixar movies take place in complete fantasy land. We have talking sea creatures in Finding Nemo, talking cars in Cars. But Inside Out deals with the complex ins and outs (pun intended) of the human brain.
So the producers made sure to work with psychologists, such as UC Berkeley professor of psychology Dacher Keltner, to ensure they got the science right. Dacher has in interviews said he thinks the Pixar “nailed it”, and very accurately depicted many of the emotional and psychological changes that happen during adolescence.
