Riley and her parents move to San Francisco during the opening scenes of the movie, and those are filled with some very pretty views. So you may not have noticed those birds sitting on the telephone poles and wires.
They are no randomly chosen birds, but are actually the ones from the 2000 Pixar short For The Birds, where a bunch of small arrogant birds get taught a lesson when rejecting a new, bigger bird.
