In the first Iron Man, we learn Tony attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he graduated at the top of his class at only 17. It was also where he first met James “Rhodey” Rhodes, who’d go on to become War Machine. There’s another MIT-related detail in that movie, though, that’d pay off years later.
When we first meet Pepper Potts, she runs a few things by Tony, including a requested MIT commencement speech that he claims is way too far ahead to bother him with. Turns out Pepper was right – he only got around to giving that speech in Captain America: Civil War, eight years later.
