One of TFATWS’s main themes is African-Americans’ struggle for acceptance. In episode five, Sam visits Isaiah Bradley, a former soldier who received an experimental – and unwitting – dose of the Super Soldier Serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. Isaiah tells Sam that when his fellow soldiers were captured, he went behind enemy lines to free them himself.

His reward? Being experimented on and then erased from history. His story’s an eerie mirror image to that of Steve in Captain America: The First Avenger. After rescuing Bucky and the Howling Commandos from a Hydra prison camp, he’s richly rewarded and gets turned into America’s living embodiment. The dichotomy’s inescapable.
